iPhone and Android work differently
Apple only turns on alerts for a web app after it is installed to your home screen. Android and desktop Chrome can turn on alerts right in the browser, no install required, though installing still gives you the full app feel. That is the whole reason for two separate guides below, one set of instructions for both phones would leave someone stuck.
Install with Safari
- 1Open claimmysquare.com in Safari (this has to be Safari, not Chrome, on iPhone).
- 2Tap the Share button at the bottom of the screen.
- 3Scroll down the menu and tap Add to Home Screen.
- 4Tap Add in the top right corner.
- 5Open ClaimMySquare from the new icon on your home screen, not from Safari.
On iPhone, alerts only work after you do this. That is an Apple rule that applies to every website that wants to send alerts, it is not something ClaimMySquare chose.
Install with Chrome
- 1Open claimmysquare.com in Chrome.
- 2Tap Install when the bar pops up at the bottom of the screen.
- 3If you do not see that bar, tap the three-dot menu in the top right and tap Install app.
- 4Confirm the install and open it from your home screen.
Alerts work on Android either way, installed or not. Installing just makes it feel like a real app and opens faster.
What you get by installing
- Opens straight to your boards, no typing the address again
- Works offline for a board you already opened
- Alerts you the moment a quarter is won
- No app store account needed, no download wait
Troubleshooting
I do not see the alerts button
You are probably on an iPhone using Safari without installing yet. Install to your home screen first using the steps above, then open the app from the home screen icon. The alerts button only shows up after that.
I tapped Allow but nothing buzzes
Check that your phone is not on silent, and make sure the app is not sitting open in front of you. Alerts only fire when the app is in the background or closed, if you are already looking at the board you will just see it update live instead.
I want to turn alerts off
Tap the same alerts button again inside the app to switch them back off, any time.
